In 1960, the gals who had been a great help to their husbands who were in the midst of forming Delaware Legion Br.598, started holding meetings to form an Auxiliary themselves. These, too, were conducted in the basements of Leona Keay and Marg Jackson. An application was made to Command. In 1962 the Charter to the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 598 Delaware was granted.
When the Supertest Gas Station was purchased, many of our gals put a lot of hours working to get the building in tip top shape and ready for use. The Ladies had many fund-raising programs on the go. They tended the baseball booth in the park, ran fashion shows, jewellery and tupperware parties, bingo and basket draws. The Ladies put on Christmas parties for the kids, organized banquets and prepared dinners for functions.
Auxiliary members attend conventions and the comrades enjoy a fun sports program. We attended functions and went dancing with veteran shut-ins at Parkwood Hospital. The Auxiliary has adopted veterans to provide for and visit regularly We hosted the Big Blue Bus Visits at the Branch the 1st Saturday of every month. We entertained our visitors with piano playing, sing songs and dancing. Upon leaving they would try to kidnap some of our ladies for the bus ride home. It was great fun.
The Auxiliary financially gave to the “Support Our Troops Fund”. This organization was especially close to our hearts as our President’s son was serving in Afghanistan. The “Red Shirt Brigade” proudly supported “Red Fridays” Over the years we have assisted the Branch in many of their endeavours and supported them faithfully along with maintaining the Ladies Auxiliary obligations
